Autism Spectrum Sensory and Immune Support Therapy (ASSIST)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability involving many bodily systems, primarily the gut microbiome, the immune system, the neurological system and cognitive development process. This leads to a host of abnormal behavioral and functional disturbances. The major manifestation is an inability to communicate to the outside world in a normal manner. Certain areas of the brain overfunction while other areas seem to be lagging, leading to a kind of non-synchronous functioning of the person. A diagnosis of ASD now includes numerous conditions that used to be diagnosed separately; autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, and Asperger’s syndrome. These conditions are now classified under autism spectrum disorder.

Factors contributing to the development of ASD

Scientific research is in its infancy when it comes to explaining the cause behind this disorder. Looking at ADHD in a holistic way, it seems to be caused by a chain of adverse events leading up to this complex neurodevelopmental disorder. The primary areas of disturbance are related to changes in the gut microbiome, the immune system and the interlinked neurological functioning. In other words, it involves disturbances in multiple organ systems and processes affected by numerous factors.

Some of the key factors linked to these disturbances are:

  1. Preterm birth: Neurologic Consequences of Preterm Birth
  2. C-section birth: The first exposure to bacteria that form a healthy microbiome is during the natural birth process. A child is deprived of this initial dose of ‘probiotics’ if the birth is through a C-section.
  3. Lack of or inadequate breastfeeding: It not only affects the microbiome but also the general nutrition of the developing child. There is no real substitute for breast milk. Artificial feeds are loaded with sugar and do not provide the child the nutrients needed.
  4. Gut microbiome dysbiosis in the mother (due to wrong diet, use of antibiotics, stress and anxiety, alcohol or tobacco use during pregnancy).
  5. Use of antibiotics for mother or child
  6. Adverse reaction to vaccinations
  7. Environmental toxins
  8. Stress during pregnancy
  9. Lack of exercise (mother)
  10. Long term use of medications (mother)

Signs and Symptoms

People with ASD often have problems with social and emotional communication. There is a marked tendency to repeat certain behaviors and a reluctance to accept changes in their daily activities. Many people with ASD also have unusual ways of learning, reacting to things or focusing. Signs of ASD begin during early childhood and can be noticed as early as age 2.

The following are some signs that are usually observed.

(Please note that multiple signs need to be consistently present in a child to be diagnosed and it is done by a professional)

  • Not pointing at objects to show interest (for example, not point at a passing car)

  • Not following another person when they point at an object

  • Having difficulty relating to others or not showing any interest in people around

  • Avoiding eye contact and wanting to be alone

  • Difficulty understanding other people’s feelings or talking about their own feelings

  • dislike for being held or cuddled, or cuddling only when they want to

  • Being unaware when people talk to them, but responding to other sounds

  • Be very interested in people, but not know how to talk, play, or relate to them

  • Repeating or echoing words or phrases said to them, or repeating words or phrases instead of normal language. Having trouble expressing their needs using words or gestures

  • Not able to play “pretend” games (for example, not pretend to “feed” a doll)

  • Repeating certain actions over and over again

  • Have trouble adapting when there is a routine change

  • Have unusual or strong reactions to the way things smell, taste, look, feel, or sound.

  • Losing skills and abilities they once had (for example, stop saying words they were able to use)

treatment

Treatment of ASD with ASSIST (Autism Spectrum Sensory and Immune Support Therapy):

The treatment focus areas are:

The treatment approach can be summarized in 3 words.

Each individual is unique with their expression of health imbalance and are treated as such. The treatment approach can be summarized in 3 words:

Know. Heal. Evolve.

To truly heal, one must first know oneself, and all that causes one’s disease. For, it is only after true healing that one evolves to their full potential.

Know. Heal. Evolve.

Step 1

Know

Using the Health-O-Meter© Analysis

  • This step involves investigation and assessment of the child using homeopathic analysis and psychological assessment. All aspects of a child’s life and history are carefully analyzed to find clues to contributing or causative factors.
Step 2

Heal

Using The KIDS Protocol© and PhiloLife Therapies

  • A combination of appropriate therapies are employed to treat the implicated causes and improve general health. Special emphasis is laid on the gut microbiome and its effect on the immune and neurological functioning. Along with homeopathy as the natural healing medicine, occupational therapy, speech therapy and other allied therapies may be employed.
Step 3

Evolve

Using The KIDS Protocol© and PhiloLife Therapies

  • As the child begins to show better functioning and abilities, various self help tools and training programs are employed to enable the child to reach their best potential.
