Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability involving many bodily systems, primarily the gut microbiome, the immune system, the neurological system and cognitive development process. This leads to a host of abnormal behavioral and functional disturbances. The major manifestation is an inability to communicate to the outside world in a normal manner. Certain areas of the brain overfunction while other areas seem to be lagging, leading to a kind of non-synchronous functioning of the person. A diagnosis of ASD now includes numerous conditions that used to be diagnosed separately; autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, and Asperger’s syndrome. These conditions are now classified under autism spectrum disorder.
Scientific research is in its infancy when it comes to explaining the cause behind this disorder. Looking at ADHD in a holistic way, it seems to be caused by a chain of adverse events leading up to this complex neurodevelopmental disorder. The primary areas of disturbance are related to changes in the gut microbiome, the immune system and the interlinked neurological functioning. In other words, it involves disturbances in multiple organ systems and processes affected by numerous factors.
People with ASD often have problems with social and emotional communication. There is a marked tendency to repeat certain behaviors and a reluctance to accept changes in their daily activities. Many people with ASD also have unusual ways of learning, reacting to things or focusing. Signs of ASD begin during early childhood and can be noticed as early as age 2.
