“All disease begins in the gut” is a quote attributed to the Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates nearly 2500 years ago still holds true. As far as my ‘gut feeling’ goes, not much has changed over the centuries. Every time we put something into our bodies, as food, chemicals or hormones, we either feed disease or fight it! Modern day physicians, who take the Hippocratic oath seem to disregard Hippocrates’s opinion in this regard.
The process of digestion starts even before we eat. Just the thought of eating triggers a release of various substances in our bodies that prepare for digesting it. It is therefore extremely important that we pay attention not only to what goes inside our bodies but also under what circumstances that happens.
How can something as robust as our digestive system have a disorder? Well, we create it. We do that by feeding it something it cannot tolerate and process.
One of the most common causes behind digestive problems is the quality of food we consume. I don’t mean how expensive and fresh-looking they are, but how they are grown and shipped to you. Modern farming, dairy, fishing and food production degrades foods to such an extent that it becomes a burden for our bodies to process efficiently. One of the most crucial components of our digestion is our gut microbiome, and it is negatively affected by the following:
Environmental toxins through foods:
Emotions and Stress:
Emotional disturbance and stress are as important as toxic foods when it comes to many digestive disorders. Irritable bowel syndrome is a good example of how anxiety and stress can trigger a host of symptoms when all investigations show there is nothing wrong with the digestive organs.
Irregularities with routine:
The human body needs a certain rhythm to function. With most people not respecting this rhythm it is not surprising that the body is unable to function normally. Irregular eating times, sleeping times, lack of exercise all come together to cause common digestive issues.
With the STEPS Program©, we treat the person and not just the digestive disorder. Here are some of the common disorders we treat and find that they are not limited to the digestive function:
Food intolerances: (also see Immune System Disorders)
These can be the real cause of digestive symptoms and manifest as bloating, gassiness, colic, diarrhea, constipation etc.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease:
In inflammatory bowel disease, symptoms like diarrhea, tummy pain, increased frequency of passing stools, mucus or blood in stool seem to be digestive symptoms but are actually related to an immune disorder like:
Other digestion related diseases:
By treating the person and the underlying cause rather than just managing the digestive symptoms. Most conventional treatments fail to resolve digestive problems because the objective is to relieve the symptoms without resolving the cause behind those symptoms. A true cure is only possible if all contributing factors are removed and the body is allowed to regain natural function and balance.
The treatment approach can be summarized in 3 words.
To truly heal, one must first know oneself, and all that causes one’s disease. For, it is only after true healing that one evolves to their full potential.
